By: Alastair Hamilton

If you’ve got a pickup truck or an SUV, you may think that you don’t need to make an investment in a bike rack of any kind, because there’s plenty of room in the back of the truck or your sports utility vehicle for a bike or two. Right?

However, after you’ve driven around with your bike rattling around in the back of your SUV or truck, you may change your mind.

It’s not only the noise that may get on your nerves. Grease and dirt can quite easily transfer from your bike to the upholstery of the SUV, and of course you’ll have to flip those seats up and down to ensure you have enough room.

Even if you don’t care about the state of your truck bed, it’s easy to scratch your bike as well and you don’t want that. Scratches turn into rust. And if you’re carrying more than one bike, the chances of scratches or staining is multiplied.

What can you do about it? You can’t get a roof rack for your truck, obviously, and the roof of your SUV will be too high to comfortably lift a bike up to the roof.

No problem – if you’ve got a trailer hitch on the back of your truck or SUV, then all you need to do is get a receiver bike rack, more commonly known as a hitch bike rack. (The receiver is the name of the ball on which a trailer hitch is placed.)

Everybody Wins with a Receiver Hitch Bike Rack

Lots of companies offer hitch racks, from Advantage to Saris to Yakima.

There’s a couple of things you need to bear in mind when buying a hitch or receiver rack – what’s the diameter of the ball on which the hitch has to fit? Once you know that dimension, you also have to decide how many bikes you’re going to carry. You can buy a hitch rack that will carry up to five bikes at a time.

If you’re nervous about having your bicycles secured on the back of you vehicle, you can also explore the option of a bed mount.

This is a device that runs horizontally from one side of your truck bed to the other. You then put your bikes onto this rack and secure them down so that they stand up securely and don’t rattle around. You can also buy a similar device for your SUV, although you still have the hassle of moving around the seats – depending on the size of your vehicle.

If you’ve got a pickup or an SUV, then you’ve invested a lot in your vehicle. You’ve probably also invested a lot in your bike as well. So why not invest a little bit more in a receiver bike rack to keep everything safe, clean, and neat.

There’s few investments that will cost you so little and deliver so much than a car bike rack.

If you’re a bicyclist, you already know the pleasures and advantages of bike riding. Biking is an excellent way to lose weight, or more importantly to maintain once you’ve lost that weight. And it’s also a most enjoyable way to see the sights of a city. But biking is a lot more enjoyable if you can get out to the parks or out into the suburbs where you can enjoy the quiet of nature.

If you hesitate to bike because you don’t like being on your own, there are plenty of biking clubs eager for members. By joining a bike club you’ll meet people who share the same kind of interests. You’ll have an incentive to go out biking on a regular basis. It’s a win win situation.

The whole wide world is before you – at least, the parts of it that you can reach with your car. By taking advantage of your mechanical wheels you can get out to the trails in the mountains, woods, or even on the beaches.

But if you’re going on a long distance journey, you’ll need to transport your bikes somehow, and the perfect way to do that is with a car bike rack.

You’ve spent a lot of money on your bike – whether it’s one designed to take you over hill and dale, or one designed to take you careening down mountain trails – and you don’t want it damaged or scratched before you even get it out onto the trails.

You’ve also spent a lot of money on your car, truck or SUV, and you don’t want that unnecessarily scratched, or stained with dirt or grease.

So you need to invest in a car bicycle rack as well.

The Car Bike Carrier for Every Vehicle

There is a bike rack out there that will fit any car, any truck, any SUV.

There are three types of bike rack on the market. The most common rack you see is the rear-mounted rack, which is attached to the trunk of your car. This type of rack generally only holds up to 3 bicycles.

Also available is the hitch rack, sometimes called the receiver rack. This type of car bike rack fits over your car hitch, which keeps the bikes further away from your trunk, and you can generally hold up to five bicycles.

Those two racks are the most popular, but some people worry about being rear-ended in an accident, which would of course do a considerable amount of damage to their bicycles. So they elect to get a roof rack.

The roof rack, also called a top rack, is just what it seems – a rack that fits on the top of your car. Bikes are safer up there if you’re afraid of a casual fender bender. But you do have to have the strength to lift the bike up or down from its perch.

There are so many styles of car bike racks, so many manufacturers of quality, that you’ll be sure to find something that fits your needs at the price you can afford, and it will protect your investments in car and bike as well. So don’t delay, go out and get a car bike rack today.

By: Trevor Mulholland

There are those among us who collect big toys not just for the sake of displaying them, but also of enjoying them to the fullest. Pocket bikes, for example, are there to be ridden and seen in public in, and customizing pocket bikes is a way to show the world that you know your stuff. For the true pocket bike enthusiast, only the possession of mini chopper bikes can provide the genuine badge of creativity and uniqueness.

Mini chopper bikes are essentially custom-made pocket bikes. You can order them from reliable manufacturers of pocket bikes of known models, such as Harley-Davidson models. Alternatively, you could look overseas for more affordable, yet no less stylish, models. China is considered the headquarters of affordable pocket bike models, custom or regular… but other manufacturing destinations, such as India, are fast catching up.

Back in the post-World War II United States, motorcycle enthusiasts started taking out parts of their bikes that they considered too ugly, too bulky, or just not functional enough. They modified their bikes to suit their tastes, chopping out the parts that they felt were excessive; hence the term “chopper” bikes. Such bikes are often streamlined for aesthetic purposes, but serious racers also do it for a boost in speed.

Chopper bikes can be easily spotted on sight. A trained eye will note their lack of distinctive motorcycle parts, such as turn indicators, fenders and yes, even front brakes. But even the untrained eye can spot a chopper bike, because many of them have the bulky spring-suspended saddle removed, which means the seat is much closer to the ground than regular bikes. Removing the saddle lessens the bike’s weight, and optimizes the bike for racing. For this reason, chopper bikes are especially useful to dirt track racers.

The act of “chopping” does not only involve cropping out the unwanted parts of a motorcycle – some reposition the parts in order to create a custom look. Sometimes, bike enthusiasts do this themselves, but many find there are more advantages to letting experts handle the work. The most famous chopper bike shop in the world is said to be the one that is also the first: Wild Child’s Custom Shop of Kansas City, Missouri, owned by James “Wild Child” Greene.

Mini chopper bikes follow the tradition set forth by regular chopper bikes, carrying the unique and unusual freedom of style and movement on to this new generation.

By: Gertrude

A pickup truck is a vehicle that is commonly used for off-road adventures and usually once destination is reached the rest of the outdoor fun is continued by means of biking. Pickup trucks have a lot of space at the back that can accommodate lots of cargoes including a bike.

Maintaining order in the cargoes at the back of the pickup is very important especially when you have a bike that often when not tied down securely can damaged the other cargoes plus may smashed into the back window of your pickup. And of course too much tossing and smashing and banging will damaged your bike. One bike is bad enough just think if you have a couple of unsecured bikes at the back of your pickup. The mess and damaged will be multiplied.

Then there is the noise caused by the bike rattling around in the back of the truck which can be quite disturbing while you’re driving. And that’s not all grease and dirt can transfer easily from your bike to your other cargoes and just imagine the mess that you will have to clean up afterwards.

What can you do about it?

To prevent such unsightly incident from happening as a pickup truck owner you would have to invest on a bike rack to keep your bike on hold. Bike racks or bicycle racks are devices in which bicycles may be securely attached to an automobile such pickups or bus for transporting bicycles. A truck bed bike rack is a bicycle rack that is especially designed for pickup trucks.

In case you have a trailer hitch at the back of your truck or SUV then all you would need is to get a receiver bike rack also known as a hitch bike rack. And by the way the receiver is the term for the ball on which a trailer hitch is placed.

Things to consider when buying a bike rack?

There are so many models and styles of bike racks to choose from however you simply can’t buy any of them unless you fully take some important things into consideration.

Your first consideration when purchasing a bike rack should be the number of bikes you will be carrying. Bike racks comes in different sizes and shapes. The most common sizes are designed to carry as few as one bike and as many as four bikes. Try to consider the number of bikes you will need your bike rack to hold and also keep in mind the possibility of adding more bikes in the future. Likewise keep in mind that if one bike rack is not enough to hold all of your bikes, you may be able to equip your vehicle with two.

Your next consideration should be is where you want to attached your bike rack to your vehicle. As much as there are many ways of killing a cat so are there ways of attaching bike racks on your vehicle. Bikes racks may be mounted on the roof, mounted on a trailer hitch, or attached to the trunk or read door. Remember that where you decide to put your bike rack is very important to the result that you want to achieve.

Bike racks placed on the roof is great since it’s out of the way. You won’t have to worry with your bikes getting in line with your driving view or blocking the access to the trunk. The downside of a roof rack, however is that it makes retrieving and stowing a little harder.

Trunk or rear mounted bike racks are much easier to use, and are not very costly. They are easy to attach with straps and hooks to your car and can be easily removed when not in use. And of course it’s not without flaws also; the disadvantages of using a trunk mounted bike rack are as follows: makes retrieving to the trunk difficult as well as accessing the rear of the vehicle. Trunk or rear mounted bike racks have less durable construction since they rely on fabric straps and less sturdy metal and plastic pieces and therefore more probe to damage and theft.

The bike rack that is attached to the trailer hitch is made of sturdy metal construction and can hold up to four bicycles. Obviously your vehicle needs to have a trailer hitch in order to use this type of back rack.

One of the greatest appeals of mountain biking is that it is a unisex sport. Mountain biking does not discriminate on the basis of gender. Nor does it eliminate participants due to their ages or ethnicities; in its early years it was largely the domain of men and boys, but now women and girl mountain bikers are joining the fun in record numbers.

Girls mountain biking has begun to achieve prominence in the sport, thanks to the teams of girls mountain bikers fielded by many US high schools. High school mountain biking programs allow female students to master the techniques necessary to succeed in girls mountain biking competitions, and many of them are the equal of the male bikers in their schools.

NorCal

The NorCal High School Mountain Bike League, founded in 2001, opened up the world of girls mountain biking to Elena Spittler, who was the league’s girls mountain biking champion in 2005. She joined the Berkeley High School Mountain Biking Team as its single female member, simply to prove that girls could succeed in the sport. She struggled to keep up with the boys during her first year on the team, but by the time she was a senior, Elena was trouncing some of her younger male teammates.

Two years after she struck a blow for girls mountain biking at her high school, there are now seven girls on the team, and the total number of participants in girls mountain biking for the entire NorCal High School Mountain Bike League has doubled.

The league now has a summer girls mountain biking camp and intends to host a girls mountain biking mini-camp in the first part of the high school racing season to help the girls competing improver their techniques and build their confidence. The league has made a commitment to these girl-specific activities, and is also training its team coaches in methods of recruiting and working with girls mountain biking candidates.

These girls mountain biking clinics and camps cover a variety of topics. The girls are required to maneuver their bikes over natural obstacles and down steep descents, learning the balance, dexterity, and bike control necessary for competing in cross country, endurance, and short course racing events. They are also schooled in bike maintenance and repair. For more info see http://www.mountainbikingreviews.com/Mountain_Biking_Dirt_Jumps on Mountain Biking Dirt Jumps

Girls Mountain Biking Clinics

The clinics stress the importance of preserving mountain biking trails, finding team sponsorship, educating the public in the positive benefits of girls mountain biking, and improving one’s biking skills. They encourage their students to develop self-reliance and challenge them in the same way that their male counterparts are challenged.

Thanks to the efforts of groups like the NorCal High School Mountain Bike League, both girls and girls mountain biking have “caught up” with the boys!

By: Guy Draper

If you are a true motocross rider, even if you have high levels of motocross fitness, at some point you should have felt the strains of arm pump.

Arm pump takes place when the blood flow entering your arms is greater than the amount of the blood flow out, this creates a backlog of pressure, as well as a lot of pain. Don’t worry though, by making a few bike modifications and increasing your motocross fitness, you could be getting rid of arm pump for life!

Luckily, there are a few ways you can try to prevent arm pump:

Riding Regularly

Although this may seem slightly basic, the logic is not. By riding regularly you are exercising the same muscles that are causing your forearms to pump up during motocross races or practices, as well as increasing your level of motocross fitness. By working these muscles of a regular basis, you will be constantly building their strength and stamina, increasing your level of motocross fitness and decreasing the amount of pain for you, the rider! <p>

Staying relaxed

Many riders do not realise that most cases of arm pump derive from holding on to tight, rather than their level of motocross fitness. As you can imagine, the scenario here is pretty basic, instead of tightening your grip, focus your brain into allowing you to ride with more flow, and relieving some of the pressure from your forearms. The seat time you build up here will also increase your motocross fitness! <p>

This may seem difficult and believe me it is, as holding on tight is human instinct. Many riders spend short sessions every time they ride literally practicing to relax on the bike, which may sound silly, but you will reap the rewards when arm pump disappears for ever! <p>

Work it out

An important part of increasing your motocross fitness is visiting the gym every now and then. One mistake many motocross riders make when trying to increase their level of motocross fitness is lifting weights that are too heavy. When I say to heavy, I mean for what they are trying to achieve, rather than their capabilities.

Motocross relies on cardiovascular endurance more than anything, faster blood flow and a greater supply of oxygen to muscles, so light weights, running, cycling, jogging and swimming are all good options to increase your motocross fitness. Lifting heavy weights in small sets is training your body to go all out for a short space of time, rather than maintain pace, something you definitely don’t want as a motocross rider.

Simple stretches and rotations for your fingers, wrists and forearms can reduce arm pump a greater deal, so ditch the weights!

Bike modifications

Personally I have made a few minor modifications to my bike, all aided by trial and error and all have decreased my level of arm pump, even though my motocross fitness has stayed the same.

Seat Cover/Rad Shrouds – My bike now has a seat cover that uses a gripper material. Previously I was using force via my arms and legs to keep myself stable, but I find that the seat cover relieves some of that pressure. The same goes for my radiator shrouds, which have now been fitted with gripper material which comes into contact with my knees.

Suspension set up – While it’s nice to blow a few hundred dollars buying graphics plastics and new riding gear, the best money you can spend is setting up your suspension for your size and weight. This is the key to a faster lap time and decreased arm pump, without increasing your motocross fitness!

My solution!

I have been using a Powerball now for around 2 years; I use it on a daily basis and also use it to as a 5 minute warm up for my arms before riding. Since starting the gym and using the Powerball I have a lot more strength in my wrists as well as a lot less arm pump.

Obviously the Powerball is not perfect, but it has definitely worked for me. (Don’t bother with my more expensive versions; they all work in the same way!)

For more hint and tips on how to keep yourself fit for motocross as well as bike maintenance tips, please take a look at Motocross Mania

I have worked in IT for around 20 years now. I originally started when punch cards where the main form of inputing data into a computer. I saw the advent of the PC and the Internet. I currently work on Unix systems, mainly HP and I work with HP Openview. I have worked on everything from PDP, VAX, IBM systems and worked with perl, cgi, php, awk, mysql, oracle, plus to many others to mention.

I currenty have several income streams as well as my main job. I have several websites which create a small income and I distribute utilities throught the Utility Warehouse (Telecom Plus), which is slowly giving me a truly passive income.

Kids love to try new and exciting sports. The pocket bikes may be small and cute, but they are fast and can cause serious damage and injury. Follow some basic safety steps and you can let your kids enjoy riding the pocket bike with a peace of mind.

By: Norazlina
Kids find pocket bikes exciting and a whole lot of fun, but they’re also motorized high speed racing vehicles. Parents must ensure extra care is taken before letting the kids operate a pocket bike. With the proper precautions parents are able to reduce or avoid dangerous and serious injury or death. Follow these basic safety tips at all times when letting kids ride pocket bikes.

Helmet – The most important piece of protective gear you can wear is a certified pocket bike helmet! Wearing an approved helmet may reduce the risk of serious injury or death. Ensure the helmets meet with local authorities’ required helmet certification. Be sure kids always wear helmets with the chinstrap securely buckled.

Full Body Riding Suit– Though knee pads and elbow pads with hard caps (plastic or otherwise) offer increased protection for adults, it is better for kids to wear a one-piece riding suit.

Gloves & Boots – Making sure kids wear sock and boot when riding the pocket bike will protect them most serious injuries. Sneakers can also be worn till you find suitable boots for them. Never in any circumstances wear sandals or footwear that exposes parts of the feet.

Age Appropriateness: Usually, pocket bikes are designed for children aged 13-16, even then, they should not be allowed to operate pocket bikes without close adult supervision. Children under 12 should never ride pocket bikes. However, pocket bike manufacturers do recommend the age appropriateness of their pocket bikes and all local laws regarding age restrictions.

Avoid Streets and Sidewalks: Make sure your kids do not ride their pocket bikes on highways, streets, sidewalks, roads, paths, or other areas used by motor vehicles. It is illegal and a pocket bikes low profile puts the rider at great risk of being hit by a motor vehicle that doesn’t see them.

Local Laws and Regulations: Find out and observe all local pocket bike laws and regulations.

Understand The Power and Capabilities: Though small in size, most pocket bikes are capable of reaching high speeds. Help your kids to understand the power their pocket bike is capable of and to be cautious of that power when riding.

Don’t be over-cautious till there’s no room for fun. Just keep in mind that pocket bikes are not toys and follow these safety guidelines. Let the FUN begin.
